Tips on what chain to buy?
Tips on what chain to buy?
Hi!
I just broke my chain by being an ass, but anyways...
I had a Primo half link chain: http://shop.primobmx.com/p/27993/Primo510Chain
But I'm not sure what's a good option for me. I just know it should be a 1/8 but not sure if I can just go and get a shimano for example and it would be good.

Re: Tips on what chain to buy?
The cheap ass option is "1/8" standardkedja för oväxlade cyklar" from Biltema. KMC something, 39:- iirc
it's brown but gets the job done.
But you could probably get just a 1/8" half link with a "screw pin" at some lbs to replace the broken one even cheaper.

Re: Tips on what chain to buy?
Thanks for the tips!
Is there any reason why I should go with half-linked instead a normal one?
I had a friend tell me to avoid half linked chains.

To get the right tension on a non-track or non-horizontal forkend? Don't see the reason for half-link otherwise.
Re: Tips on what chain to buy?
I have a Dolan Track champion. So it's a track horizontal forkended setup.

Just like RZ-1 said or any other ss-chain.

KMC-snapon link though, not a fan of those. They also stopped using track/uni-connector for the Z1 inox. not cool.

XXL has KMC Z510 Hx for 120kr. Smooth shiny silver nickel-plated chain. Some of the other cheaper rust protected chains have a matt and rough finish - which will not help keep dirt nor moisture off the chain. And they look awful.

On the website the image is of the fugly brown non-nickled version (H). But in stores (atleast Hamngatan in Stockholm) they sell the silver one (Hx).

I actually bought this one Super nice price as well. I saw other stores in Stockholm sell it for 250kr!
Re: Tips on what chain to buy?
^That looks a lot like the one Biltema sells for 39 kr... (yes, Biltema's is a KMC)

WOW really? that's cool.
The 510 comes in silver and has the "twist lock" link. Other than that i guess they are very similar. It says z on both, the biltema one doesn't have a number.

Re: Tips on what chain to buy?
btw, just rode today with it and it's way noisy than my previous chain, specially when I sprint. Any ideas if this is normal?
Re: Tips on what chain to buy?
Brand new chain on used gears. Your old chain was worn (in) and more pliable. If your chainline was/is not perfect your old chain would have adapted to that lateral movement. New chain has yet to do that. Also, towards the end you probably rode your old chain with less tension (because it became stretched over time) than you put your new chain on with.
The whole drivetrain was worn to fit the old chain. Give the new chain time to settle and wear in. A week should do if you ride everyday. But yes some chains are supposedly noisier than others. I just recently swapped to a new chain myself (Sram PC1) after the old one stretched comfortably beyond 0.75%. Old chain was very quiet towards the end. New chain gave a noticeable tick as each links entered or exited the sprocket in front or back. (Don't really know which, just mentioned as a measure of frequency of the noise; in comparison thuds that might emanate from worn freewheel or crank typically have lower frequency). After a week that noise has decreased to the point that I don't hear it riding through an indoor garage.

Greasy chains are quiet, noise is good.

That's nice to hear.
I was really worried as I rode to and back from work. Checked the drives for signs of wear and the drive line. Nothing seems to be off. So it's probably all fine
