Wheel building class?
For some time now I have been wanting to learn how to build my own wheels.
I was thinking that there are probably others that might also be interested. If so, I would like to organize I suppose 6-8 people to join me. Everyone could chip in for example 150-200 kroner to pay for the time of an experienced wheel builder to be our mentor some weekend in the near future (maybe after everyone is back from vacation).
I am hoping that Phil (Dr. Spoke) could be the mentor but if others have any ideas, please chip in suggestions. He came to mind because I know he has the skills, maybe even has the place, and the necessary tools as well. We would bring our own parts (or buy them from him) and we ourselves build the wheels with his supervision and guidance.
I've looked at some of the wheel building guildes/books, and without some hands on training, I'm lost.
Anyone game?

Update:
I spoke with Phil over the weekend and proposed the idea of hosting a wheel building class, and he was very into the whole idea. He has had workshops in the past and has a lot of experience teaching others to wrench as well as building wheels. We brainstormed a couple of ideas and he recommended that if anyone is really going to get anything out of this, that it is going to take 5-8 hours of solid teaching. He broke it down into the following:
He also thought, that depending on how this goes, that this may be the first in possibly a whole series of workshops in the future that he could host out of his new shop location (Neuvelo).
Phil’s starting price of building a pair of wheels is about 800 Kroner and as he is not teaching anyone, this normally takes him about an hour of his time. As you can see above, we are already talking about 5-8 hours of his time to give the course. Teaching us also gives his business both positive and negative results (potential competition, etc.) so to make a long story short, he would not be willing to go below his starting wheel building price of 800 Kroner per person. There goes my original idea of 150-200 Kroner per person out the window.
I’m still game and for those that are still interested, please let me know as it should ideally be a class with a minimum of 5 students and a maximum of 8, and take place sometime in August (if this works for everyone).
Beer afterwards is still on…

He broke it down into the following:
- 1 hour of theory and principle (lacing technique, hub size, rim structure, spoke count, etc.)
2 hours of instruction
2+ hours of actual wheel building
He also thought, that depending on how this goes, that this may be the first in possibly a whole series of workshops in the future that he could host out of his new shop location (Neuvelo).
