En stor dag för mig idag.

Detta gick ut på CR-listan för en stund sedan:

Well, in the early seventies some Swedish guys rode for the Ferretti team but because of previously agreed sponsor deals they continued riding the same brand as they did as amateurs at home in Sweden - Monark (as in monarch/king - hence the crowns). I am of course talking about the Pettersson brothers Gosta, Sture, Thomas and Erik. Many times world champions and olympic medalists then turned pro - with the oldest brother Gosta as the strong man - winning the -71 Giro, etc.

The magazine article about Masi in my last post mentions the Ferretti team and the Monark team - but that is a misunderstanding. There never was a Monark team. It was just some of the riders in the Ferretti team riding Monark-labeled bikes.

I am proud to say that I have found and been able to buy one of those bikes.

A 1971 Masi

A Masi team bike

A Ferretti team bike

A bike with race history

A bike with previous owners - with nice palamares

A bike from 1971 in almost perfect condition

A bike I have dreamed about for many years

Any of the above, on its own, would make my day. Put them all together and imagine my state of mind when finding one that you can put “check” after all of the above. The hair on my arms actually stood right out and my brain was speeding.

I have searched for many years and I think I have mentioned it here on the list many years ago.

I have had this bike since June 2011 but after many years of following discussions on this list and others, I knew I had to make sure no one could debate its origin, history or any other aspect of it.

I have been in contact with:
Bob H
Gosta Pettersson
Tomas Faglum (ex Pettersson and one of the brothers)
Alberto Masi
Previous owners - of whom none has been a collector. They just had the bike because it was a good racing bike. It has stayed in the same family almost all the time since it was sold "out of pro racing". It was built as a time trial bike and has stayed like that.

Alberto has confirmed this bike being built for Tomas. Tomas himself says it is his or Gostas - he cannot say for sure. Gosta says it is probably Tomas bike. They both say that bikes were not individuals for them - they had a lot of bikes - this is just one of them. Alberto says the paintjob is probably made in Sweden but careful investigation points to it being done in Italy and then the decals applied afterwards in Sweden.

And now I felt it was time to share this with you all. I cannot get any more proof of this bikes history but I think Albertos confirmation together with what Thomas, Gosta and the previous owners say - there is not much to add.

I still have not touched anything (tough after such a long time....) - waiting for a friend and professional photographer to document the find in detail before and during the cleaning and detailing of the bike.

I am a very happy man. After years of looking for the needle in the haystack I can just enjoy it.

Letter code F61 (the same as another Swedish Masi Monark that was found earlier - though repainted). When I get to check the fork - I will see if there is a date there but as far as I can see this is a bike from 1971. I base this on the four slot BB.

The De Rosa panto parts and Omas/Cobra parts are going to stay on the bike out of respect for the former owners. It might be easy to think – restore it to Pettersson/Faglum specs but the guys who has used the bike after him were dedicated cyclists also and they and the bike deserves to be respected. It is something as rare as a real race bike that has got some period correct upgrades. The bike was bought around 1975 and upgraded with the Omas/Cobra lightening products at that time. The buyer then used it for time trials and won some regional championships on it. It was then passed on to his son, who used it in the same manner. They both kept it perfectly maintained and cared for it religiously. The De Rosa panto parts were on the bike when they got it. One can only fantasize about the story behind them. When I asked Tomas and Gosta about it they just said - "the mechanics in the team probably did not bother to keep things apart". Along with the bike there also is a pair of Cinelli pedals.

Please have a look at photos at:

Enjoy and share my happiness

Kind regards

When people with excellent skills in a specific area declare their excellence and succes, it's a rewarding read even for the novice and ignorant!

Elegant Gazelle på Velorama museum i Holland. Helt chockerande samling föresten... Mest 1800 och tidigt 1900-tal.
